SUMMARY:2018 Hamburg Meteorite Hunt
DESCRIPTION:Rocks From Space!\nOn the evening of Jan 16th\, 2018\, a meteor entered the earths atmosphere over southeast Michigan and exploded over Livingston County.  Dozens of fragments of the meteor were found scattered on the lakes below in Hamburg Township and there are many more are waiting to be found. The General Motors Astronomy Club has received permission to hunt for meteorites at an undisclosed location near Pinckney.  Join us on November 6 and you can help find a meteorite. \nAfter a day of hunting on a frozen lake for meteorites from the recent Michigan bolide\, Todd Slisher and team point to their finds. The crew found them in an afternoon hunt on a frozen lake. From left: Sandra Macika\, Todd Slisher\, Tony Licata\, and Brian Wolff. Not pictured but also on the team is Buddy Stark. From Sky & Telescope article\, picture from Todd Slisher \n  \nHunt schedule:\n\n9:00 AM – Samir Hariri\, a Professor of Geology from Schoolcraft College\, will present a short lecture on meteorites.  Coffee and donuts will be provided.\n9:30 AM – Split up into search teams and coordinate hunt locations\n10:00 AM – Self-guided hunt begins\n12:00PM – Meet back at the staging area for lunch and to review finds.  If you are unable to join us at 9AM\, you may meet up with the group at this time.\n\n  \nDetails and Recommendation:\n\nBe sure to eat a good breakfast\, so you will have energy for walking!\nThere is a restaurant on-site for lunch\, or you may venture out to other local restaurants.\nParticipants will be given magnet sticks\, clipboards\, and buckets as supplies last.  If you have a good strong magnet at home\, please bring it along\, just in case we run out.\nYou be given a gridded map\, which we will review with you before the hunt.  Most of the search area is wooded and terrain varies\, but all levels of physical ability will be accommodated\, so don’t worry if you don’t feel like walking far.  That’s the best part about meteorite hunting\, anyone can do it and the rocks could be ANYWHERE\, including in the parking lot.\nIf you plan to search in the woods\, you should wear long sleeves and sturdy footwear and keep and watch out for poison-ivy.  Optionally\, you may want to wear waterproof boots and search in swampy areas\, but it is purely up to you.  Our goal is to cover as much ground as possible\, and there is plenty of area available to search\, so don’t worry about that!\n\n  \nReasons for Secrecy:\n\n There are professional meteorite hunters still looking for fallout from the Hamburg meteor and we want to be the first to hunt this location.\n If we are successful in our hunt and folks enjoy it\, we may want to search again in the future\, as an annual club activity.\n It’s fun to have a secret!  We thought it would be fun for adults and kids alike to join in a “top secret mission” 😊\n\n  \nYou Must RSVP:\nContact Jim Goodall to RSVP for this event\, at james.a.goodall@gm.com or 586-709-5888.  On the day before the hunt\, the exact location of the hunt will be sent out via email to the group. \nYou may track this event on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1123982327758941/ \nFor more info on the Hamburg Meteorite and the picture shown above\, visit the Sky & Telescope Article from January 22\, 2018.

SUMMARY:Cloudy Nights Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The forecast seems to be definite clouds for tonight\, so we are cancelling the observing night\, but… \nWe are going to try a new alternative option.  The club will be hosting a workshop for kids and adults to work on projects\, learn about science\, and commiserate on a cloudy night.  Also\, membership packages and club merchandise will be available for pickup/purchase. \nGMAC Cloudy Nights Workshop\nThis is a new event from the General Motors Astronomy Club that will act as a backup to cancelled observing nights.  Depending on interest\, we may continue this event or change it to meet your needs.  The event is held in our 2000 square-foot pole barn\, where we have lots of space for projects\, plenty of tools\, and a play area for the kids.  Activities include: \n\nSPECIAL PROJECT TONIGHT: Measuring Density – Our Senior Astronomer\, Tony Licata\, found some actual meteorites from the January bolide event in Hamburg Township and I have been working on calculating the trajectory of the meteor in a computer simulation.  Tony has agreed to bring his meteorites tonight and we will be measuring their density to aid in the computer simulation efforts.  We would encourage you to bring other small objects (less than 2 inches) and we can measure their density as well.\nThe kids will be invited to join a fun hands-on activity\, entitled “Will it Float”\, with playdough and water!\nPizza\, snacks\, and drinks provided\nWork on science projects\, build stuff\nLearn to use tools and lab equipment (hammers\, ratchets\, impact wrench\, multimeters\, graduated cylinders\, mass balances\, and much more…)\n\n  \nWhat to Bring (optional): \n\nSmall objects to measure density\nYour telescope\, and we can teach you how to clean and collimate it\nAnything broken (appliances\, toys\, computers) and we’ll fix it together… or we’ll at least find out how it works 😊\n\n  \nJoin us 6PM to 10PM at: \nGoodall Barn \n13665 Hibner Rd\nHartland\, MI 48353\n+1 540 718 3278 \nBear with us\, this is the first time we’ve done a workshop and it is last minute\, so we’ll have to make it fun together.  If you have any ideas for projects\, bring them along.  Our team of engineers and designers love to work on projects with the kids.  We hope to see you there!  If you have any questions\, don’t hesitate to call me.

SUMMARY:McMath-Hulbert Solar Observatory Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exclusive tour of the McMath – Hulbert solar observatory\, located in Lake Angelus\, Michigan.  Jim Shedlowsky\, of the Warren Astronomical Society\, will lead a small group through the historic building\, sharing inside knowledge and stories along the way.  The tour begins at 10 AM and will be completed by noon.  Space on the tour is limited\, so if you are interested in attending\, please email Jim Goodall to reserve your spot. \nThe McMath – Hulbert Solar Observatory\, was founded in 1930 by three amateur astronomers\, Francis McMath\, his son Robert McMath\, and Henry Hulbert\, with the goal of enhancing their clever development of time lapse astrophotography\, for outreach purposes. It soon garnered the interests of the University of Michigan and evolved into a world-class solar observatory\, operated by the U of M through 1979. It is now in private ownership\, nonfunctional\, but largely intact. \nClub membership is required for this tour\, and may be purchased through our Online Store.   For safety and accessibility reasons\, this tour is not recommmended for persons with reduced mobility or children under the age of 10. \nFacebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/217220272256636/

SUMMARY:Peregrine Falcon Viewing & Star Party
DESCRIPTION:The General Motors Astronomy Club will be joining the Warren Peregrine Falcon Group next Thursday\, June 14th\, for some birdwatching and stargazing. Feel free to bring a chair\, binoculars\, and a telescope\, if you have one. We will be sharing our telescopes to view the birds and then enjoying the night sky afterward\, if the weather is nice. Light pollution might be an issue in Warren\, but Jupiter should be easily visible after sunset. Hope to see you there!
